Outdoor Art Comes Indoors

It has been fascinating to watch the development of Naperville’s Century Walk, the public art initiative that spreads throughout the downtown area. This outdoor exhibit was launched in 1995 under the guidance of founder and president Brand Bobosky and has thrived over the past 15 years.
Currently, 35 pieces of artwork have been created and are on permanent outdoor display. Mosaics, reliefs, mobiles, and sculptures are featured throughout the community and lend a touch of elegance, amusement and heritage to our streets, buildings and walkways.
From whimsy to sublime, the Century Walk offers artwork that is sure to delight: the Cat in the Hat, Dick Tracy and the World’s Famous Artists join Genevieve, Officer Friendly and the Doughboy. Throw in Naperville’s Municipal Band and five World War II veterans and the streets of Naperville become a gallery without walls, inviting the public to come and enjoy.
Now you can bring this art into your home and enjoy it at your leisure in the form of the newly published coffee table book entitled “Century Walk: Art Imitating History.”Written by Naperville author Jini Leeds Clare, the colorful112-page edition defines the Century Walk and introduces readers to its vast collection of art. With over 300photographs, the beautifully designed book provides rich details about the 35 murals, sculptures, and mosaics that comprise this unusual outdoor gallery and offers a glimpse into the lives of those responsible for creating each piece.
“When I spoke with the artists and learned how art impacted their lives, I realized that their stories needed to be an essential part of this book,” Clare stated. She spent considerable time locating and interviewing the various artists and their family members and feels her endeavors are well worth her effort. “Many people will be surprised to learn that Century Walk features artists who are known nationally and internationally or who are leaders in their fields.”
